Collaborative Planning Scenario. Do we want to just start writing and adding to it as we create it?
Looking at the example you sent, it looks like we don’t need a dialogue like we did below - just more of an explanation of how the collaboration got started - is that how you see it?OK -
Yes, but I still think we can base the explanation off of our role playing. During an ELAR meeting??
we need to set up the scenario first, I think - like on your example they gave a bit of background (librarian sent an email to all teachers at the beginning of year, etc.)
agree. On the rubric we need to state who first approached the other partner, motivation for the partnership, and where it took place. It could be in a meeting, an email, the hall, the library, etc. Let’s decide where first. That might help us with what would happen next.
we can start by saying that the librarian approached the department at some point and offered up her help with collaborating, then the teacher (you) came to the librarian about attending their team meeting to talk about the collaboration.
That sounds great. So it initially began in the meeting but the teacher pursued the librarian’s invitation. right?
How about the librarian offered her services at a staff meeting at the beginning of the year - explained how she could collaborate with the different grade levels. Now, the 5th grade team would like some help teaching synthesis to their classes and think that the librarian could be a great resource.
Ok! but maybe we should just use a single teacher instead of a team...since I am only one person??
OK - that works.
the motivation could be that the students always have difficulty with synthesizing and the teacher is looking for a fresh new way to teach it.
excellent!
I guess we should start with the librarian since she first approached the staff at the beginning of the year...let’s add that she hand out a brochure and showed the staff on the website all she could do??
As I read and reread the directions, I don’t think we need an actual conversation between the two - just a description of how it happened - right?
you are right...we didn’t need the dialogue or role playing.

So, we can start explaining how it all came to be…. (sounds like a movie or something…)
something like that...do you want to write the librarian and I will write the teacher and then we can add/delete until we are happy with it?

OK - I’ll write up how the librarian suggested her help to the staff and you write up why you approach her.
yes! let’s try it :)

LIbrarian: At a staff meeting at the beginning of the year, Mrs. Copeland, the school librarian, presented a brief explanation of how she could collaborate with teachers to help them teach the grade level TEKS. She explained to the teachers that she wanted to help them. She asked them to keep in mind the resources and experience that she could bring to a collaboration. She also pointed out that having two educators working with the class means that the students receive more one on one help. She handed out a brochure that outlined all she could do for and with them.

Teacher: Mrs. Dickinson, a fifth grade ELAR teacher, recently reviewed the data from the last reading benchmark. The results were far from acceptable, much less exemplary. As usual the weakest TEKS objective was student’s not being able to read across multiple text and construct new meaning. She knew she had to approach teaching this reading comprehension skill in a new and fresh way. Sitting on her desk was a brochure from Mrs. Copeland, the school librarian. As she was thumbing through it, she was reminded that the librarian was willing to plan and coteach. She had never utilized this resource before but she was willing to give it a try. After all, synthesizing requires multiple texts. The library would be a perfect place get the needed resources! Mrs. Dickinson walked quickly to the library to visit with Mrs. Copeland hoping the invitation was still good.

What would be a good word for my blank….promising maybe exemplary something like that...those are STAAR words...
acceptable? stellar? Good teacher speak. I have to work on my lingo - I have been out of the classroom too long! :) Lucky you!!!! I have been through TAAS, TAKS, and now the STAAR...yuck!!
Last time I taught was before all that - last test I remember giving was CAT. And it was no big deal - teach the kids to bubble the circles and then hand out the test. And to think we survived….
I know! it is crazy. tomorrow and wednesday is testing for 5th grade...I feel so sorry for those poor babies.
Yes - I am a long term sub at an elementary library. I hate the build up to this - its crazy and unbelievably aggravating.
ok...what do you think? I definitely think we are on the right track!!
Yes - I like what we have written. I can cut/paste it when we have edited it, if needed.
Let’s check it.
Do we have who approached who? librarian initially offered help, teacher approached her afterwards
Do we have the motivation? need help with TEKS - wants new perspective
Do we have where the first collaborative conversation took place? library - teacher came to the library
Grade level 5th grade
Content area ELAR
initial goal meet mastery??? What do you think? do we have this?I think so
initial objective TEKS objective was student’s not being able to read across multiple text and construct new meaning.

Ok...I think we can copy and paste on to the wiki. We need to link this doc as well. Can you invite Judy and Dr. M so they can view it when needed? I think I can just add the link - I don’t think I have to invite them - if they have the link, then they can view it, right? No you have to invite them...I found out the hard way from the last assignment!! Drag. We can also add a link on the wiki to a page titled “collaborative discussion” or something like that, and then copy/paste this whole thing onto the wiki page That would work too...what ever is easier. . I will copy and paste the scenario if you take care of the link. We need to meet again this week to answer the questions at the bottom of the rubric before we turn it in. What day works best for you? I am free all week.
I think I can meet tomorrow night - my husband is having a procedure done at the outpatient office and I don’t know what tomorrow night holds - he should be fine. I can email you and we can tentatively pick a time. Wednesday night my daughter has a band performance.
Do you want to try and finish it tonight?? I’m game!I can keep working too.
Great...I just copied and pasted the scenario.Where do we
Sorry - I clicked on edit and then saw that you were! I think it goes under “Post your scenario here” I see it now.
no worries. it is still all there :) I saved it and am now out of the edit feature. Where do we go to answer the questions? it says here on the rubric. do we each turn in a rubric like last time?
I
It looks like we answer the 5 questions on the rubric - but it says to do it as a team. Maybe we can cut/paste the rubric onto the google doc and then fill it in?
Let’s copy and paste on the wiki. but we couldn’t work on it together, but we could open a discussion tab and figure out the answers there. What do you think?
OK. I just made a page to put this document on - I’ll link it later - since we both can’t edit at the same time.

Do we want to make a separate page for the rubric and link it to the main page, or just post the rubric to the main page?
I guess separate page for the rubric and link it to the main page

Do you want me to make the page?
I can. Give me a minute and then meet me there!!
It’s a deal.

Ok I am done...let’s meet on the discussion tab that I created on the new rubric page.
OK!

Kim the librarian
Debbi the teacher

Hi Kim. I am so glad that you are meeting with the 5th grade ELAR department today!

Hey Debbi! I am always happy to help you all! What are you planning in ELAR right now?

Well we are working on the reading comprehension strategy, Synthesizing. In our scope and sequence we have this TEKS that we really need to focus on. The students always have difficulty synthesizing. Here is the TEKS here: 5.11E: Synthesize and make logical connections between ideas within a text and across two or three texts representing similar or different genres. Can you help us find these different genres for us to use?

I would love to help you. Let’s talk about what you have in mind.

What the students are expected to do is gather information from these different texts in an organized way to construct meaning. So I guess we need to decide if we are going to let the students pick the text or if we will have the text ready for them. What do you think?

It might be best to show them what we need them to do - we can model the strategy. Do you have a project in mind for them to show their learning?

Well it definitely needs to be something that shows the students “new” thinking. How about a newspaper clipping or broadcast video to showcase their Breaking news (their AHA moment).

That sounds great! You know I would love to coteach with you on this lesson. Why don’t we sit down and take a look at what you would like us to accomplish together?

Seriously? You want to work with me and help teach this lesson? That would be great!! I am so excited! I have never had the opportunity to teach with another educator before. Planning yes, but teaching no!!

Well, two heads are better than one. When can you sit down with me to take a look at the TEKS you need to cover?

Can you meet me in my classroom tomorrow during my conference period at 9:00?

That works for me. I don’t have a class at that time. I have a planning form that we can fill out to help us, since we have two teachers instead of one!

Great!! I will have the TEKS and the AASL standards, strands, and indicators so we can determine what the learning outcome looks like.
Ok - I’ll see you tomorrow!

Thanks

I guess what we need to do is our meeting next...it says meet regularly with your collaborator
Do we want to meet tomorrow night to “meet”
OK - I am home tomorrow night.
What time? How about after dinner? you and me both! I am not a night owl. what about 7? OK - I’ll take a look at what you send me and try to figure out what it is we are supposed to be doing.
anytime...I am free. I do like to finish up before 8:30 if possible. I don’t think well past that time!! 7 is great!! This will give us more time to digest what we are supposed to be doing.
